The venture to climb Agung (the highest volcano of Bali, 3100 m) from the east side, where sensible people don`t go, promised us adventures from the very beginning. In Internet there was no information about the alive people who followed this path. All we had was a map application MapsWithMe which spilled a dim light of hope for our event. Why do we decide to climb from the other side, where normal people do not go? Simply, I have already climbed from the other side and I would like to see the dawn, in fact, it was the main reason of my decision. The fact is that we cannot get around the crater in a circle, and if you go to the west, as a result, the incredible view of the dawn is half-covered by the eastern side of the crater.
So back to the point. We have decided to go early; our last campaign took us 8 hours to climb to the 2000 m of height. This time the trip promised us 2200 m of climbing and an untested path. I would like to come to the top 2 hours before the dawn to take pictures of the stars, so we decided to start climbing at 8. Of course we didn`t start at 8 (we had long preparations of tea, and then we drank it for a long time). We were at the bottom at 10 and took to the path. Immediately we faced a problem – there were many paths, far more than we need. The beginning of the path was lying through the village, and then through the fields of sweet potato, so there were paths everywhere. At first, I did not let GPS from my hand and we kept walking.. Then we discovered that we went in parallel with the path, marked on the map (50 m from it), I somehow decided that the GPS was wrong. So we walked through the fields, orchards parallel to the planned route. The path was narrow, overgrown, but still it was, and was in the right direction. The pleasure was huge, a scattering of stars overhead, the clean air, the music that played from the portable speakers. Gradually, the gardens were replaced to forest, but it was difficult to say the “forest”, it was a windfall. Dry sticks were sticking out from everywhere; every movement was accompanied by a savory crunch. And we noticed that someone has worked here with machetes, and decided that this is just a brave person made it. But then with every step it was more and more of the chopped wood, so we have concluded that this brave person was just looking for paths. For a long time we walked after him crashing through the impossible blockage. When we finally realized that the brave one does not have any consistency, we found ourselves in the middle of the forest astray …… sat down, opened the peanuts, drank some water, and looked at each other.
From the velvet depths of my gentle fragile “I” it was an idea: Stop it! Then I felt ashamed of it and this idea crawled back. After talking, we decided to go back a little bit and try to get out to the path of GPS. Meanwhile, the fighting spirit of our company was poorer. It was about 3 am, we madly wanted to drink some hot milk with desert and to hide a soft blanket. GPS showed 50 m to the path. With last forces we decided to go right through these 50m and.. it was something!!! The branches, thorns, the grass of 2 meters, vines, sticks, all at once came over to us. It seemed to me that I was dragging the floor of the jungle on a tripod, which was attached to the back. Step by step, the last efforts …
And the long-awaited exclamation of my friend was: “Path”. So … it was nearly 4 am we climbed only 1 kilometer in height, were clumsy, sleepy and hungry. The path was a thin depression in the ground from the small loose stones, overgrown with wet meter grass. Nevertheless, the forest was behind us, it was more spacious around, and we continued our way up, knowing that we shall not reach by dawn. After determining that the forest through which we went is only a small part of that front part of forest, I decided that I would look for a place for my tripod and I will not go further. The last thing I wanted to see the sunrise in the woods, and it would be so if we continued the way. All of us agreed to stop climbing, and to come to terms with the fact that Agung will be unconquered. We stayed; the guys made a fire and waited for dawn. The photos tell you more about the further things. All were satisfied by this adventure.
